Hmmmm. It would be innapropriate to make comments about my competition so let's talk 'in general.'
The only reason to have the negatives is for safekeeping if you ever want a picture made up (someone dies, etc.) and just in case something happens to the album and you need to replace pictures. Also, just to hold onto something that you might consider valuable.
As far as the cost, it seems reasonable. I charge $75 and I've heard as high as $500.
