Can anyone suggest a place to go away for a long weekend? My husband and I are looking for a place to go in late September or October that we can drive to in a few hours. Something relaxing, but with things to do if we want.

Re: Long weekend getaway
I've never been there, but I heard Lake George is a great place to go for a long weekend. Then there's the Poconos, down the Jersey shore, Ocean City, Maryland -- I've been there and you can rent a boat, there's a boardwalk, etc. There's also Mystic, Connecticut and then you also have Mohegan and Foxwoods up there also.

Lake George is GREAT.. i have been going there every summer since i was 4 years old!! its so relaxing, if you stay in the town like we do, we park the car at the hotel, then we walk about the town on the lake.. millions of souvineer shops, and loads of resturants, there is night life.. bars clubs.. mostly though we just relax and walk on the lake, take boat rides..you can take a tour of prospect mountain,, the view is incredible.. there are also granet mines, and ft william henry, or ft ticonderoga.. the sagamore hotel has a gold course..for us its the perfect getaway..also there is the great escape (amusement park) and outlet shopping!! i love the outlet shopping, every store you can imagine...let me know if you want any more details..ill be happy to fill you in,, its 4 hours from nassau

Newport, RI. My hubby and I spent our honeymoon there after we had to cancel our Canary Islands honeymoon b/c of 9/11. We had the best time. It is a wonderful place. We are looking forward to go again. You can take the ferry from either Port Jeff or Orient Point to Conneticut and then drive from there. It's not too bad of a trip getting there.

I can not say enough great things about Mohonk Mountain. The place is phenomenal if you're looking to get away from life for a while and just spend good, quality time together. It's an easy drive .. I don't think it took more than 2 hours for us to get there .. it's right off the NYS Thruway, exit 18.
It's not cheap, but it is so worth it. Your meals are included, and the food is awesome! There are tons of hiking trails, and lots of things to do. There is a small lake, with different types of boats available for use. They have horseback riding and many other things.
This is where we stayed for our 'brief' honeymoon, and we are so glad we did. The rooms have real fireplaces, and each night, I would build a fire, and we'd sit out on the balcony just gazing at the stars and talking. It was wonderful!
All of the rooms have pretty views. But, there are no tvs or radios in the rooms, so if you can't be without tv, this might not be the place for you.
They do run specials throughout the year, so you might want to check if they have any deals for the fall.
