Yes, I've had friends that did this. The Ferries are pretty big and if you visit the activity people in your hotel, they can prob book it for you.
I just got back from Cancun (and LOVED it!!). You can take a cab $40 each way) to Playa Del Carmen and the ferry is right there to get to Cozumel. I'm not sure how much it is. There's lot of great shopping right there too so you should check it out before or after you get on the ferry.

We stayed at Secrets Silversands. It was fantastic! DH and I are trying to go back in the winter for another long weekend.
